How to Store Electronics: Prepare, Pack, and Protect Your Devices
Electronics are among the easiest things to ruin in storage, and most of the damage is invisible until you plug the device in. This guide walks through the preparation that prevents it.

The ten steps at a glance
A TV, a computer, a games console, or a sound system is a box of delicate screens, circuit boards, and connectors, and every one of those parts has its own way of dying quietly. Humidity corrodes the circuits, heat warps screens and degrades batteries, a forgotten battery leaks acid through the inside, static electricity fries a board without leaving a mark, and the weight of one box stacked on another cracks what it presses on.
The fix is preparation. Every expert guide lands on the same method, and in Bahrain, where the air is hot and humid most of the year, the cool-and-dry part is the step that decides whether everything else worked.

The method works the same whether you are storing a spare TV during a renovation, packing up a home office, or putting your whole setup away while you are out of the country.
Step 1: Declutter and let go of dead tech
Do not pay to store electronics you will never switch on again. Be honest with each item: if it is outdated technology you have already replaced and it carries no sentimental value, it should not go into storage. Old electronics still have places to go. Working devices sell easily on online marketplaces or can be donated, and some manufacturers and retailers run take-back and recycling programmes for old equipment. Whatever you do, do not put electronics in the household rubbish.
In Bahrain, here is where each option actually leads. All checked July 2026:
- Selling. Dubizzle is the busy marketplace: its used-mobile section alone carried around 865 live ads, sellers in Manama, Muharraq, and Riffa, with asking prices from a few dinars for old handsets up to BHD 200 for recent flagship phones. FSA Trading, at bh.fsatrading.com, buys and sells used and refurbished iPhones, Samsungs, and iPads if you would rather deal with a shop than a stranger.
- Trading in. Jarir Bookstore runs a device trade-in: hand over a smartphone, smartwatch, laptop, or tablet and get a voucher toward something new. You can trade up to three devices a month, the new item has to be worth at least as much as the voucher, and you have to turn up in person with your ID or residence permit. Their line is 77997755.
- Recycling. Crown Industries, the long-running recycler in Bahrain, takes desktops, laptops, printers, servers, copiers, hard disks, phones, tablets, and lithium-ion batteries, and also does data destruction on drives before they go. Factory 1577, Road 5141, Askar, +973 17830038. If you would rather drop a small item into a box than deal with a factory, Zain Bahrain runs an e-waste collection with the Supreme Council for the Environment: bring old electronics to its headquarters in Seef and put them in the containers there, and Crown Industries collects the contents. - Donating. This is the thin one. Bahrain has no programme that refurbishes old devices and passes them to people who need them. The closest thing is charity resale: The Dogfather's Second Hand Shop, off Budaiya Highway on Jannusan Avenue, accepts working electronics alongside clothes, books, and household goods, and sells them to fund animal rescue. The condition is that it works. Anything broken belongs in recycling, not in a charity's back room, where it just becomes their disposal bill.
There is a money angle too. A device stored carelessly loses its resale value even if it still works, because scratches, dents, and cosmetic damage put buyers off. Packing properly protects the price you could still get for it later.
Step 2: Back up your data
The device is replaceable. The photos, files, and saves inside it often are not. Before any computer, laptop, phone, tablet, or console goes into a box, copy its important data to an external drive, a cloud service, or ideally both, so one copy surviving does not depend on the other.
Then keep those backups out of the storage unit. An external drive stored in the same box as the computer it backs up protects you from nothing. Drives and backup copies stay at home.
Step 3: Write an inventory and photograph everything
Before you disconnect a single cable, make a record.
- List every device with its make, model, and serial number, especially the expensive ones. If you ever need to make an insurance claim, this list is what the insurer asks for.
- Photograph each device's condition from a couple of angles, so its state going into storage is documented.
- Photograph the back of each setup before unplugging anything. A picture of which cable goes into which socket turns reassembly from an hour of guessing into five minutes of copying.
- Keep the paperwork together. Manuals, warranty documents, and receipts go into one folder, digital or physical, cross-referenced with your box labels. It also pays to check the manual itself: many manufacturers include their own instructions for packing and storing the device, and those beat any general advice.
Step 4: Power down, unplug, and empty every device
Shut each device down fully and unplug it at least 24 hours before packing. That gives it time to cool completely and reduces the static charge it carries, both of which matter for what comes next. Nothing goes into storage plugged in, and nothing stays on standby.
Then empty everything out. Discs come out of consoles and players, tapes and cassettes out of anything that takes them, memory cards out of cameras, and ink cartridges out of printers. Media left inside a machine for months can damage the mechanism and is the first thing to go missing. Pack it all separately and label it.
Step 5: Take the batteries out
Batteries are the classic slow killer of stored electronics. Left inside a device, they leak corrosive chemicals over time, and the leak eats the contacts and circuits around it. That damage is permanent. Take the batteries out of everything that holds them: remote controls, keyboards, mice, game controllers, clocks, torches, toys, and power tools.
Lithium-ion batteries deserve extra respect, because on top of leaking they are a fire risk in heat. Remove them where the device allows it, and keep them in a cool, ventilated space rather than sealed in a hot box. In a Bahrain summer, that rules out any unconditioned storeroom.
Step 6: Clean each device
Dust is not just cosmetic. Left on a device in storage, it attracts moisture and clogs vents, and both feed the corrosion you are trying to prevent. Before packing, blow the dust out of vents, ports, and fans with compressed air, wipe the outside down with an anti-static cloth, and clean screens with a cloth or spray made for electronics, never a household cleaner. Go gently around ports and connectors.
Step 7: Label and bag cables and accessories
A box of unlabelled black cables is a puzzle nobody enjoys. Sort it out before packing.
- Colour-code the connections. Put a small coloured sticker on each end of a cable and a matching one on the socket it belongs to, plus a label naming the device. Reassembly becomes paint-by-numbers.
- Coil and secure each cable with a velcro strap, zip tie, or elastic band so it cannot tangle.
- Bag accessories by device. Chargers, remotes, mice, and small parts go into labelled zip-lock bags, and each bag travels in the same box as its device, padded so it cannot rattle against the machine in transit.
Step 8: Wrap and box each device properly
This is the step that decides whether things arrive back working, so it gets the most detail.
Use the original box if you still have it. The manufacturer's packaging, with its moulded foam inserts, was engineered to hold that exact device safely. Nothing you improvise will beat it. This is the single best reason to keep boxes when you buy electronics.
If the original box is gone, build the equivalent:
- Sturdy boxes or lidded plastic bins. Double-walled cardboard is strong enough for the move itself, but for months in storage a lidded plastic bin is the safer home, because cardboard slowly absorbs moisture and loses its strength. In Bahrain's humid air that trade matters more than in most places.
- Anti-static bubble wrap or foam. Static electricity can destroy a circuit board without leaving any visible mark, so sensitive items, computers, laptops, consoles, drives, and anything with exposed boards, get anti-static wrap or anti-static bags, not the regular kind.
- A box slightly larger than the item, with a few centimetres of padding on every side. Line the bottom, wrap the device in several layers, and fill every void with foam, packing paper, or cushioning so nothing can shift. One device per box is the rule. If items must share, heaviest at the bottom with padding between.
- Double-box the expensive things. For high-value items, put the padded box inside a second, larger box with more cushioning between the two. The inner box protects the device, the outer box takes the knocks.
Screens need their own routine
Never put newspaper or rough paper directly on a screen, since it scratches the surface and can leave ink behind. Cover the screen with a soft cloth or blanket first, cut a piece of cardboard to the size of the screen and tape it over as a rigid shield, then wrap the whole device in padding.
Never wrap electronics in plastic film. Cling wrap and plastic bags trap moisture against the device and grow mould and mildew inside, which in a humid climate is close to guaranteed. Dust protection comes from breathable covers, and moisture protection comes from silica gel.
Put a silica gel packet in every box. These little pouches absorb the stray moisture that gets in anyway, and they are the cheapest insurance in this whole guide.
Seal and label like it matters. Tape the bottom seams first, then all top seams, in an H pattern for strength. Label each box with its contents, the device it holds, FRAGILE, this-way-up, and which side the screen faces, so nobody stacks or carries it wrong. Two refinements: tape a photo of the contents on the outside for anything stored long term, and never write the words expensive electronics on a box, because a label like that is an invitation.
Buying the materials in Bahrain
Silica gel is the easy part, and the cheapest thing in this guide: noon Bahrain lists a hundred one-gram sachets from about BHD 2.12, a 250-pack from about BHD 4.72, and colour-indicating packs that change shade once they are saturated, so you can see at a glance when to swap them, from about BHD 4.30. Boxes and bins are just as close: Jarir sells a corrugated shipping box at BD 0.95 including VAT, Lulu prices a 55-litre lidded plastic box at BHD 3.000, and Cosmoplast Bahrain runs from BHD 3.500 for a 22-litre clear box with a lockable lid to BHD 14.900 for 132 litres.
Anti-static wrap and anti-static bags are the exception. A dedicated search found no shop on the island stocking them. The fix is cheap and online: AliExpress's Bahrain storefront lists packs of anti-static bags for a dinar or two, around BHD 1.6 for twenty large bags or BHD 1.7 for a hundred foil ziplock ones, and UAE packaging suppliers ship to Bahrain. Step 9: Choose a secure, climate-controlled space
Where the boxes go matters as much as what is in them. The spaces electronics usually end up in, the garage, the shed, the storeroom, are exactly the wrong ones: unconditioned, damp, dusty, and swinging between temperature extremes. Every guide's answer is the same: electronics belong in a climate-controlled space, meaning steady temperature and humidity all year. One large storage operator keeps its climate-controlled units between 55 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, about 13 to 27 Celsius, year-round, and notes that in seriously humid climates dehumidified storage, which actively pulls moisture out of the air, is the step up worth considering. Bahrain is exactly that climate.
Because electronics are valuable and easy to carry, security is the other half of the choice. When comparing storage facilities, look for the features the best ones publish: video surveillance, indoor units behind a second layer of access control, a manager on site, and individually alarmed units. A facility with several of these is a far harder target than a garage.
On size, electronics rarely need much room. A locker-sized unit swallows a boxed TV, a computer, and a stack of accessory boxes. A household's worth of devices plus furniture wants something closer to a small room, and the size guide translates that into an actual unit.
Step 10: Set up the unit so nothing gets crushed
How you load the unit is the last line of defence.
- Off the floor. Floors collect moisture, so electronics go on shelving or pallets, never on bare concrete.
- Near the back. The back of the unit is the protected zone, away from the door's dust and traffic.
- Labels facing out, so you can find a device without moving five boxes.
- Air between the boxes. Leave small gaps so air can move and moisture cannot pool.
- Nothing heavy on top, nothing leaning against. Weight on a box of electronics cracks screens and misaligns components, and the same goes for items leaned against a device. TVs and monitors stand upright, never flat. An unboxed TV stands padded against the wall with a blanket over the screen and nothing touching it.
- Breathable covers for big items. Anything too large to box, cover with a cotton sheet or canvas throw against dust. Not plastic.
- Nothing plugged in. Equipment can never be plugged in inside a storage unit. Anything that needs charging does it at home.
Device by device: what each one needs
- Desktop computers and laptops. Store towers upright, in the original box if possible. For long stays, consider taking the hard drive out and keeping it at home, since the data is the part you cannot rebuy. Sensitive components and external drives go in anti-static bags.
- TVs and monitors. Upright always, never flat, because a screen lying down carries stress across its whole surface. Soft cover, rigid cardboard shield, padding, and nothing resting against the screen side.
- Game consoles. Discs out, anti-static wrap on, extra cushioning around the ports and buttons, controllers bagged with their console.
- Audio equipment. Pack speakers, amplifiers, and receivers separately, with padding protecting the knobs and switches. Keep speakers away from anything magnetic, and store the lot upright.
- Printers. Ink cartridges out and sealed in a bag, or they dry out and leak.
- Phones, tablets, and cameras. Wrap each one individually so nothing rubs, memory cards out, chargers in their labelled bag.
Storing electronics in Bahrain: humidity is the main enemy
Every electronics storage guide names the same villains: humidity, which corrodes circuit boards from the inside, heat, which warps screens and ages batteries, temperature swings, which shorten component life and cause connection failures and screen discolouration, and dust, which carries moisture into every vent. Guides written for milder countries treat those as the worst case. In Bahrain they are the default. The island is hot and humid most of the year, and the summer is extreme, so a device in an unconditioned space here is not occasionally at risk, it is being worked on all year.
That is why the usual spare spaces, the garage, the outdoor storeroom, the roof room, are the worst places on the property for electronics. They combine everything on the villain list at once. At home, stored electronics belong inside the air-conditioned envelope of the house, in a closet or cupboard in a conditioned room, boxed as above with silica gel in every container.

While they are stored: check in every few months
Stored electronics are not sealed away and forgotten. Check on them roughly every quarter: look for dust building up, boxes that have shifted or been compressed, and any sign of moisture in the containers, and swap silica gel packets that have done their work. Write the storage date on each box label and add the date of each inspection, so you always know how long something has been sitting and when it was last seen.
Devices with built-in batteries benefit from being powered on briefly now and then to keep the battery healthy. Since nothing can be plugged in inside a unit, that means taking the device home for an afternoon, charging it, and bringing it back. For anything stored a year or more, it is a visit worth making.
Taking electronics out of storage
The last trap is impatience on the way out. A device moved from one temperature to another builds condensation inside, and powering it on while damp can finish off electronics that survived storage perfectly. Let everything sit and acclimatise to room temperature for a few hours before plugging anything in.
While you wait, inspect each device for corrosion or physical damage, check the contents of each box against your inventory so no cable or remote has gone missing, and reassemble from the photos you took at the start. Then switch on.
